katherine's community challenge

To mark my 50th birthday, I decided to go to Sri Lanka to help build a house for a family who lost theirs in the tsunami in December 2004. This was a Community Challenge organised by ActionAid working with the house-building charity, Habitat for Humanity.

My previous Charity Challenge was successfully completed in 2002 by trekking the Inca Trail - the combined generosity of sponsors raised nearly £3,500 for ActionAid.

The Sri Lanka Community Challenge was more constructive - helping a Sri Lankan family build a new home together with ActionAid and Habitat for Humanity.

For the fund raising part of the challenge, I pledged to raise at least £3,000 for ActionAid's work around the world. I successfully completed the challenge in April and raised a total of £4,172.20!

Huge thanks go to all my very generous sponsors - without you, this would not have been possible. For more information about where the money raised will go, see MORE INFO.

I would like to pay special tribute to Geoff who, as always, has supported and encouraged me throughout. The web site is also down to him - but any errors of fact or omission are mine. My daughters also deserve special mention - I hope one day they too will be able to take part in something as rewarding. Thanks to Lily and her friend Lauren for sitting outside in the freezing cold last December selling books to raise funds. And thanks to Keziah for her idea for the One Year On event, for helping to ensure it happened and for being on the door on the night, with Ben, collecting the money!

If you'd like to have a look at my diary and photos of the build, go to THE BUILD.

After the build, we visited some of the work of one of ActionAid's partner organisations, the Siyath Foundation. To see photos and information about this, go to PROJECT VISIT.

Many of the participants in the Community Challenge took the opportunity to travel around Sri Lanka for a few days before returning home. My family treated me to a six day extension which took in some of the hill country and other beautiful parts of Sri Lanka - yet more photographs and comments are to be found at TRAVELS AROUND SRI LANKA. I highly recommend a visit to Sri Lanka - if I ever get the chance, I'll be back!
