katherine's community challenge

what's it all about?

In aid of the ActionAid
Sri Lanka Community Challenge

Katherine's challenge was to help build a basic "starter" house for a family in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka was one of 12 countries hit by the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. Sri Lanka's people had already had their lives devastated by a decade of civil war. Even more families are now unable to buy or rent adequate shelter and will not be protected against the annual monsoons or have access to clean water and sanitation systems.

Prior to the tsunami, ActionAid did not work in Sri Lanka but, strongly encouraged by their Indian staff, they realised that their lengthy experience of working in India meant they were perfectly placed to respond. The first ActionAid staff reached the affected areas of Sri Lanka the day after the tsunami. Now, working through 17 local partners, ActionAid has reached over 33,000 people in 7 districts in the first year.

ActionAid has been working in other parts of the tsunami affected area for over 30 years, Since the tsunami struck, ActionAid has been supporting and working with the survivors and this challenge is a continuation of that work. To see how ActionAid has responded to the tsunami visit their Tsunami Information Centre.

The sponsorship Katherine has raised as part of the challenge will help ActionAid in their fight against poverty worldwide.

where the money goes

1 The community challenge Some of the funds raised went directly to funding Katherines's house building venture. For this Community Challenge, ActionAid worked with the house-building charity, Habitat for Humanity to involve volunteers in helping to build homes for tsunami survivors.

2 Habitat for Humanity A proportion of the funds will go directly to help Habitat for Humanity to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world. The charity aims to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action and has built more than 200,000 homes worldwide.

3 ActionAid's priority fund The bulk of the sponsorship will be used by ActionAid for emergency relief wherever it is required. It will help to support ActionAid's priority work in more than 40 countries worldwide.
